Halliday’s Weekend Wine Tasting Trail

How lovely would it be to spend a weekend exploring Margaret River Region while you get to taste different wines as well? That is what the Halliday Wine Companion Awards is all about. It is another opportunity for Margaret River to prove its status as one of the winemaking capitals of the world and reaffirm its winemaking credentials.

There is no better way to do that than by spending two days on a trail exploring different vineyards within the region and tasting their finest wines after which awards are given for the best wines in each category. The trail transverses one end of the Margaret River Region to the other.  Stop spots on the region include:

Cullen Wines

This is one of the major landmarks of the region. As one of the founding wineries, it is a place many people will like to visit, and this makes it a great stop spot. Cullen Wines are also notable for producing some of the best wines in Australia, and its winemaker is among the top three in Australia. This winery is certified as biodynamic and organic, which has earned it recognition as the first carbon-negative winery in Australia. It produces the Diana Madeline which won the Best of Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Best of Varietal for Family in Halliday Awards. The winemaker, Vanya Cullen also won the best winemaker in 2020.

Moss Woods

This winery produces the Wilyabrup Margaret River Chardonnay 2017 which won the Best Varietal for Chardonnay in the Halliday Awards. Winemakers Keith and Claire Mugford own it.

Domaine Naturaliste

This might be a new winery since it was only launched in 2012, but the winemaker has been in the business of making wines for a much longer period. That is why it is not surprising that it won the Best Value Winery of the Year in Halliday Awards. With expertise and years of experience, the winemaker produces a wine that tastes better than the money spent buying it.

Deep Woods

This winery produces the wine that won the Best Varietal for Cabernet Sauvignon and is the farthest point north on this trail. The winemaker won the best winemaker in the Halliday Awards last year, so this winery has established itself as a force to reckon with in the industry.
